Public Works
About the Department
The Public Works Department was first organized in the early 1970’s. In 1976 the Town constructed its first real public works garage located off Fairfield Street (Route 23). This is still the headquarters for the Department.
The Department employs eight individuals consisting of a Public Works Director, foreman, mechanic, equipment operators, and 4 truck drivers/labors.
The Department has the responsibility (summer and winter) for maintaining 33 miles of town road, approximately 18.5 miles of State roads (winter only), and 7 miles of sidewalks.
In the winter, the crew utilizes five ten-wheelers, one six-wheeler, and F-550 dump trucks equipped with front plows, side wing plows, and designed to spread salt and sand. We also use two 1-ton pick-up trucks with V-plow for clearing snow around all the town buildings, properties, parking lots, and difficult areas to get to for the larger trucks. In addition, the town has a sidewalk plow for Main Street and other village areas.
Oakland is fortunate to have the large equipment and personnel who are able to perform total road reconstruction projects. The Town has saved many thousands of dollars over the years by not having to bid this work out.
