Kennebec Valley Rail Trail
A New Connection for Oakland and the Kennebec Valley
The Kennebec Valley Rail Trail (KVRT) – Oakland Extension will expand one of central Maine’s most beloved outdoor assets, creating a safe, scenic, and accessible trail connection between the existing KVRT and the Town of Oakland. Designed for yearround use, the Oakland Extension will support recreation, transportation, tourism, and community wellbeing while preserving the natural beauty of the region.
Project Overview
The Oakland Trailhead will build on the success of the existing Kennebec Valley Rail Trail by extending the multiuse path into Oakland. Following the former Madison Branch rail corridor, the extension will provide a flat, familyfriendly route suitable for walkers, runners, cyclists, ATV Riders and eventually snowmobiles.
Phase 1 was complete in October of 2025 Once Phase 2 is completed, the extension will:
- Improve connectivity between Oakland and neighboring communities
- Create a safe, offroad alternative to busy roadways
- Support active and healthy lifestyles
- Enhance access to local businesses, parks, and community destinations

Benefits to the Community
Recreation & Health
The Oakland Extension will offer residents and visitors a welcoming space to enjoy the outdoors. Whether for daily exercise, leisurely walks, ATV Rides or longer bike rides, the trail encourages physical activity and mental wellbeing for users of all ages and abilities.
Economic Impact
Trails are proven economic drivers. The extension is expected to attract visitors to Oakland, supporting local restaurants, shops and services. Increased foot and bike traffic can strengthen downtown vitality and promote Oakland as a trailfriendly destination.
Environmental Stewardship
Reusing a former rail corridor minimizes environmental impact while preserving open space. The trail will highlight local landscapes, wetlands, and wildlife, fostering appreciation for the natural environment.
Accessibility & Design
The Oakland Extension is being planned as an inclusive, multiuse trail:
- Smooth, durable surface suitable for bikes, strollers, and wheelchairs
- Gentle grades consistent with railtrail standards
- Clear signage and trail amenities where feasible
- Designed for yearround enjoyment, including walking, biking, and snowbased activities
Project Status & Next Steps
Planning and coordination efforts are underway to advance the Oakland Extension. The town recently received a Maine Trail Bond Grant to build a Park-n-Ride on the far piece of property on the Wrigley Field property that is adjacent to the Trail. The project involves collaboration among municipal leaders, regional partners, landowners, and community members. Public input and ongoing updates will be shared as the project progresses. Phase 2 should be completed this summer (2026)
